DOCSIS 3.0 Rollout 2009

work

I was part of the team of Network Engineers who engineered, tested, rolled-out and operated the new DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS platform (Arris & Casa). It took us about one and a half years to complete this rollout. We first increased the capacity in the backbone of our network and later made sure to have enough capacity in the access network to offer new fast internet services to our customers. We had to implement about 300 new network devices and migrated mainly during the night to minimize customer impact. As part of this project I learned a lot about network testing and implementation strategies and afterwards the operational part. We had close contact with our vendors and were heavily involved in the engineering and problem resolution phase. When you work on such a big project it is key to work as part of a team. It is also very important to plan, prepare and then execute so that the customer impact is as short as possible. During the time of this project we have adjusted our processes and best-practises to improve our efficiency. We have learned to successfully automate several tasks and therefore increase the amount of work during one migration while minimizing the downtime and error-rates. I am proud that I was part of this big project!
